Help us in shaping Río Hondo College's future.
What is driving this Río Hondo initiative? Why now?
Río Hondo College students, including our returning veterans, need and want greater access to university-level courses and affordable job training for in-demand careers. To accomplish this goal, the college district is considering asking our community to support a local facilities bond on the November ballot. Local bond funding will help our Río Hondo students and community benefit from upgrades to nursing, police, fire, advanced manufacturing, science, technology, engineering, math, and other job training facilities and classrooms.
How can we be assured that facilities bond funding would be spent properly?
If approved by voters, all funds raised by the kind of bond we are considering would stay local to benefit Río Hondo students and local college facilities. By law, these funds cannot be taken by the State or spent on administrators’ salaries. An Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee is required to ensure bond funds are spent properly.
I don’t have people in my household attending college. Why should this matter to me?
Quality college and job training facilities at Río Hondo College help train the workforce we need to support our community. Having Río Hondo College in our community helps maintain property values and enhances the local quality of life. As facilities are improved, our local economy will also get a needed boost.
How would better facilities improve instruction and job training at Río Hondo College?
Repairing and upgrading Río Hondo College facilities would allow the College to better prepare students for transfer to 4-year universities and enter or re-enter the workforce with the skills necessary for good-paying jobs.
Doesn’t the District have a budget for facilities maintenance?
Río Hondo College maintenance and operations staff work hard with very limited resources to keep our local college facilities safe and in adequate working condition. However, after decades of constant use by thousands of college students, the College requires repairs and upgrades that far exceed our available maintenance budget.
What about job training facilities?
Job training facilities are a top priority at Río Hondo College. In addition to upgrading academic facilities that help students prepare for transfer to 4-year colleges and universities, the measure we are considering would also ensure that the College continues to provide high-quality, affordable job-training programs. Improved facilities will help Río Hondo students seeking specialized skills get the training they need to successfully compete for in-demand jobs and careers.
