Introducing Your Next Highly Skilled Technician!
Women In Next Generation Electronic Vehicles
(WING-EV)
NSF/ATE Grant # 22002236
Introduction
The automotive industry has historically been and continues to be a male-dominated field, but as the industry evolves into electric vehicles, a new generation of technicians is needed – ones who are not afraid to work with firmware and computer technologies. Electric vehicles are clean, laptop-based, less noisy, oil-free, and contain fewer chemicals than previous vehicles.
Moving to meet the new clean vehicle mandates put into place by the Governor of California’s Executive Order N-79-20, in which all new vehicles sold in the state must be zero-emissions starting in 2035, the automotive industry is looking to bring in a new type of technician from an under-tapped and underutilized automotive workforce demographic– WOMEN. With women accounting for only 27% of the US auto manufacturing workforce, the automotive industry is striving to help support women on their path into becoming Electronic Vehicle Technicians.
