About the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program
Welcome to your journey toward college success! At Rio Hondo College, we understand the value of your hands-on apprenticeship experience. Our Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) effort allows you to earn college credits that count towards the apprenticeship college certificate and paves the way for the completion of an associate degree in one of the apprenticeship areas.

Have you been accepted by one of the apprenticeship programs? If yes, follow these steps on how to apply to Rio Hondo College:
- Make sure to select the following major when applying to the college
- Select the term you are applying for and then select the educational goal, major category and intended major.

How It Works
Collaboration with Apprenticeship Programs
We maintain close collaboration with the following apprenticeship programs:
- Southwest Carpenters
- Heat and Frost Insulators
Credit Request Process
The union provides us with a list of completers, or students can independently request credit.
Initiating the Petition
Students are connected with the apprenticeship counselor or CPL coordinator to begin the petition process.
Processing and Acknowledgment
Upon petition processing, if approved, you will receive a congratulatory letter recognizing your certificate of achievement. This letter will also contain additional information about opportunities to advance your education.
